This healthy nut spread is still delicious but much better for you!
Who doesn’t love Nutella?
It’s difficult to find someone, besides those allergic, that can resist the chocolate hazelnut treat. It’s sweet, it’s great to spread on toast or waffles or add to desserts or anything!
The problem is… it isn’t actually very good for you. Contrary to some past misconceptions, the spread doesn’t actually provide much nutritional value and has a lot of sugar. Now that is totally fine for a treat…however if you are looking for a healthier option and control sugar you are coming you will LOVE this Nutella alternative.
Fake Nutella For The Win!
I actually played around with this when my kids discovered Nutella and asked for it on toast. Up until then they only really had peanut butter on toast…but as kids to talk to kids or watch TV they begin to ask for things to try. I truly didn’t want them thinking it was the same as getting peanut butter or almond butter…it so is not!
So I was determined to find a healthier Nutella alternative.
And…it was surprisingly easy. The kids absolutely love it and even eat it with fruit and I do not mind!
How Do You Make This Nutella Alternative?
It’s so easy you may laugh.
Combine together: 1 cup of natural almond butter or peanut butter, 2 tablespoons of unsweetened organic cocoa powder, add 1 teaspoon of natural honey (optional).
That is it!
A couple of tips though…
- Make sure you use natural but butter, the oil is what allows blending better and a smoother consistency
- If you find it too dry you can add a little bit of avocado oil to make it wetter until it reaches the consistency you like
- The honey is only if you prefer it sweeter, feel free to leave it out.
What’s Better About Using This Nutella Alternative?
To be honest the benefits are the exact benefits of the nut butter you are using. You are getting protein, a substantial amount that is satisfying. This is also supplying the polyunsaturated fatty acids, due to the amount of nuts used, so it’s good for various functions in the body.
I find this spread is great to add to fruits for a fun after school snack, and a great way to give them a boost in energy before heading out to an activity.
Lastly, you are in control of the sugar! This is the biggest win.
