Summertime includes an abundance of summer fruits, including peaches…so when life hands you peaches make peach chutney!
Living in BC, I feel blessed to have an abundance of perfectly ripe and refreshing fruits every summer. Some I cannot get enough of each season include blueberries, cherries and peaches. The Okanagan is home to some of the best summer fruits, including peaches. So on our annual trip to Osoyoos, we are sure to pick up as many as possible for the rest of our summer days.
If you have not yet tried the Okanagon peaches, they are the perfect blend of tart and sweet. The juice usually flows easily and runs down the arm if you are not prepared, as you bite into a fruit you feel like you are drinking juice at the same time.
Sold?
Well, the problem, as with all fruits is the spoiling and them ripening so soon. It is why I end up freezing my leftovers and using in smoothies. However, this year I though to myself…I’m not just going to do the same eat them and freeze them routine. So…enter the peach chutney.
To be fair, I grew up in a household that always made pickled condiments and chutneys (including mint chutney). When I got married, I noticed that my mother-in-law would often get creative with chutneys and use various fruits or vegetables around the house before they spoiled. She once added peach to a tomato chutney and so remembering that, I decided to make my own and bottle it up in the fridge.
Success!
It’s a simple recipe, not much to it, but combining peaches and mint makes for the perfect summer addition to any seafood, tacos, or even tortilla chips you are enjoying on the patio. Served with some white wine and you have yourself a happy palette.
Give peach chutney a try and let me know if you think it’s a game-changer for you!
